Pregnancy Skincare

First of all, congratulations on the pregnancy! I know, I know, with the soul-sucking fatigue, the never-ending nausea, managing your diet, possibly juggling work, and taking care of your other children (including the adult one, called husband 😉 ), this time can feel incredibly overwhelming.

While we are busy being Superwoman, our bodies are changing. That includes our skin. One of the changes that is immediately visible are the stretch marks that develop on our tummies as Baby grows bigger. For some women, stretch marks can also develop on the breasts, thighs, and buttocks. Other skin ailments during pregnancy can include premature aging, fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne, itchy skin, dermatitis or eczema - all due to the hormonal fluctuations and stress that we go through during this time. This is why skincare during pregnancy is so important. As an added benefit, indulging in some skincare can also be therapeutic for Mama’s mental and emotional health!

Skincare for pregnant and breastfeeding women:

While every woman’s body is different, and will respond to pregnancy in its own unique way, I’ve made a list of skincare that should be suitable for most women* who are interested in making that pregnancy glow last way beyond childbirth!

  1. Diet and Nutrition

First things first, ladies - there is no skincare product that is as effective as what we put inside our bodies. Eat foods rich in vitamins, minerals, protein, and amino acids that help the body make collagen and hyaluronic acid. These can be eggs, fish, chicken, green leafy vegetables, avocados, garlic, berries, nuts, and seeds. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water. Trust me, you can’t drink enough. Since a lot of what you eat is being transferred to Baby, you’re really eating and drinking for two. 🙂

  1. Moisturizing Lotions

Your body is sending a lot of food and water Baby’s way, and that can dehydrate your skin. So, feel free to moisturize as much as you like! Depending on your skin type, you can choose from gel moisturizers, cream moisturizers, or body-butters. For stretch mark prevention, apply moisturizer to your belly, hips and thighs!

  1. Moisturizing Oils

Another way of moisturizing our skin is by oils, and you can reach into your kitchen cabinets for this! Coconut oil and olive oil are the best moisturizers for dry skin. There are also plenty of light-weight oils available in beauty stores like Sephora and Ulta that have SPF, and also have a pleasant fragrance, because who wants to smell like olive oil all day? 😉

  1. Sunscreen

Not the first thing on my list, but maybe it should be! Sunscreen is an important, not-to-be-missed product in your everyday skincare routine. There is no reason to skip this during pregnancy! Use a mineral sunscreen or a moisturizer with SPF daily to keep skin issues at bay during pregnancy.

  1. Vitamin C

Since Vit C is a safe product to use during pregnancy (in normal doses), make sure to include this with your skincare regimen, along with sunscreen! This will protect your skin against premature aging and hyperpigmentation. A word of caution, though, Vit C can cause some stinging or irritation when you use it for the first time, but will go away as your skin adapts to it.

  1. Serums

Serums should be used sparingly during pregnancy. But, if you are craving some extra TLC, go for serums that contain hyaluronic acids or vitamin C, and avoid anything containing retinoids, AHAs, or BHAs.

Skincare to avoid:

While most over-the-counter products are generally safe*, there are some ingredients which you should absolutely stay away from while you’re pregnant and breast-feeding. These ingredients have been linked to birth defects and malformations in Baby’s head, heart, brain and spinal cord. Again, consult your doctor before you switch to any new products to make sure it’s safe for you and Baby.

  1. Retinol and retinoid derivatives
  2. AHA/ BHA - These hydroxy acids can include glycolic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid.
  3. Ultra fragranced products
  4. Parabens and BPA

With all that said, I just want to congratulate you once again on your pregnancy journey, and point out that what you are experiencing right now is one of the most miraculous feats a human body can achieve! While your body is working to nurture and nourish the little blessing in your womb, indulge in some much-needed TLC, and try to enjoy this magical time!

Love,
Sohini
